Beyond Hatred DVD - dr. Oliver Meyrou

In September 2002, François Chenu was set upon in a park in Rheims by three skinheads who had gone out looking for an 'Arab' to beat up. When they didn't find one, they settled for François who, when asked, confirmed that he was gay. The trio attacked him and left him for dead. Although the details of the crime are presented, the real focus of the film is its aftermath and the family's efforts to find a way of coping with the loss of their beloved son and brother.

On Sept 13 2002, a racially motivated murder was committed in Reims, France. Three skinheads hid in a part with the intention of 'doing an Arab." Instead they came across Francois Chenu, a self-assured gay man who refused to be intimated by the thugs. He was beaten unconscious and his body thrown into a nearby pond where he drowned. The murderers were quickly apprehended by the police and brought to trial in a lengthy court case which because a 'cause celbere' in the media.

Oliver Meyrou documents the trail and subsequent repercussions on the family and how their feelings changed from initial rage towards forgiveness. This is a universal film about love and hatred, tolerance and intolerance, and above all else, the human spirit.
