'If this were made in England it would be the new Full Monty' The Daily Telegraph. Mon is pretty good at volleyball, which is why he suspects his exclusion from the local team has something to do with his being gay. So when a new coach, Bee, is appointed - a lesbian, as it happens, with several championships to her name - and the macho, self-appointed star player Muangman leads a walk-out in disgust, Mon and his pal Jung not only offer their services but agree to help find a whole new team to play alongside them and Chai, the sole remaining player from the old line-up. Hunky dory, except that the new recruits are drag queens (save for one still lurking in the closet and another who''s become a woman) - not your usual championship contenders nor, you''d think, likely to go far given the conservative attitudes of most officials, reporters and spectators.

Think again, at least if history (the film is inspired by real people and events) and box-office success are anything to go by. Thailand's Yongyoot Thongkongtoon has taken and shaken up a pretty familiar formula - motley underdogs triumph over injustice, prejudice and dirty deeds by dint of determination, courage, charm and true team spirit - to create an entertainment that emerges as rousingly victorious as its characters. True, it steals quite shamelessly from ''''Breaking Away''''. ''''Strictly Ballroom'''' and ''''Priscilla. Queen of the Desert'''' - but at least it plagiarises the right feelgood movies, with tongue placed firmly, so to speak, in cheek. Furthermore. the ladyboys so conspicuously give it all they''''ve got - emotionally, dramatically. campily. even on court - that their attainment of huge popular acclaim and support comes across as credible rather than as mere movie contrivance. Funny, touching. big-hearted, mercifully short of Hollywood-style sanctimony, highly efficient; in short, it''''s a winner.
