Lola and Bilidikid DVD - dir. Kutlug Ataman

Turkish Director Kutlug Ataman's stunning thriller, received critical acclaim at the 1999 Edinburgh International Film Festival. Released in Cinemas in the UK in Spring 2000 and then on video in 2001.

Murat (Baki Davrak) is a 17-year-old gay Turk living in Berlin, who''s desperately trying to come out in the tradition-bound confines of the immigrant family. His quest for acceptance leads him to the enigmatic Lola (Candi Mukli), regining queen of the Turkish gay set.

Murat gets drawn into a new and exciting world of cross -dressers, street hustlers, old German aristocrats and young neo-nazi punks. But when tragedy strikes and painful secrets from his family''s part begin to surface, sexual and political tensions ignite. Murat is, once again, caught between two world, and forced to take a side.

A powerful exploration of entrenched homophobia and racism, Lola and Bilidikid offers a portent metaphor for the oppression and alienation of a subculture. Assuredly directed by Kutlug Ataman, this is an exceptional film which balances its hefty themes with moments of tenderness and humour.
