I can be a woman. I can be a man. I can be anyone.

After the police raid his local park one night in Beijing, A-Lan, a young gay writer, is held for intensive one-on-one interrogation. Unwanted memories are gradually revealed, and we get glimpses of A-Lan's tumultuous childhood, his first sexual experiences, forced farm labour and his incessant search for love.

As the night progresses, the interrogating officer confronts his own feelings, in a response that alternates between revulsion and fascination. An awkward love story unfolds.
