Rodney Evans' first feature follows the emotional and psychological journey of young, black, gay artist Perry (Anthony Mackie, Million Dollar Baby, 8 Mile).
Thrown out by his family when they discover his sexuality, Perry struggles to maintain his college scholarship by working in a homeless shelter. Here he befriends the elderly Bruce Nugent, a poet and artist who co-founded literary journal Fire!alongside such legendary figures as poet Langston Hughes, novelist Zora Neale Hurston and publisher Wallace Thurman. Taken on a metaphorical and literal journey through the older man's memories, Perry finds himself immersed in the glory days of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance.
As the movie flips back and forth from present day (in colour) to the past (in sparkling black and white), Perry begins not only to get a perspective on the prejudices he's fighting - black vs. white, gay vs. straight, light-skinned vs. dark-skinned - but to begins to find himself too.
