This film adaptation of the smash hit London play by Julian Mitchell and starring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth explores homosexuality, honesty and hypocrisy set against the background of an elite British public school during the summer of 1931.
This ground-breaking and highly controversial gay film featuring a very young Rupert Everett caused an outcry when it was originally released. Despite the constraints of British society in the 1930's Guy Bennett (Everett) embraces his homosexuality at a time when even the words were criminal. Clever and hedonistic, Bennett is in his penultimate year at school and is convinced he will rise to the heights of his chosen career in the diplomatic service.
His best friend and love interest Tommy Judd (Colin Firth) is committed to Lenin's "brave new world" and despises such bourgeois aspirations.
Exploring the rigid and stifling world of public school, class and empire Bennett's world soon comes crashing down when his lack of discretion leads to tragic results and ends up with the ultimate betrayal.
