Until 2004, I only knew Bel Ami from a San Francisco point of view. Then, at George Duroy's invitation, I visited Slovakia and the Czech Republic to get a first hand glimpse and I was floored. The camaraderie of the boys was infectious, their beauty intoxicating. I felt driven to capture their spirit through the eye of my camera, from my own point of view, I proposed a book to George - "The Boys of Bel Ami" - that I would shoot on location in Eastern Europe. He loved the idea but suggested a different location. "Come to South Africa," he said. "It's warmer and I'll be shooting a movie there in December." I gulped. It was a big trip for me to make, but I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up... Howard Roffman
