Set in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, nine of Harold's closest friends are throwing him a birthday party. Guest include a male prostitute, a Roman Catholic alcoholic, a closet gay man, an African-American whose tastes run to white boy; a flamboyantly stereotypical camp gay man; a couple with monogamy issues; and Alan - Michael's allegedly straight college friend, who has something to tell him....
During the party the self-deprecating humour takes a nasty turn as the men grow increasingly inebriated. The party culminates in a game where each man must call someone and tell him he loves him!
